Classification by Shape
Based on shape, grabs can be classified into clamshell grabs and orange-peel grabs. The former consists of two complete bucket-shaped components, while the latter is composed of three or more jaws.
Classification by Drive Method
Based on the drive method, grabs can be broadly categorized into two types: hydraulic grabs and mechanical grabs.
Hydraulic grabs are equipped with their own opening and closing mechanisms, typically driven by hydraulic cylinders; hydraulic grabs composed of multiple jaws are also referred to as hydraulic grapples. Hydraulic grabs are widely utilized in specialized hydraulic equipment, such as hydraulic excavators and hydraulic tower cranes.
Hydraulic grabs designed specifically for excavators are divided into two types: rotating and non-rotating. Non-rotating grabs utilize the hydraulic circuit of the excavator's bucket cylinder, requiring no additional hydraulic valve blocks or piping. Rotating grabs, conversely, require the installation of a dedicated set of hydraulic valve blocks and piping for control.
