Introduction To Hydraulic Grabs

Mar 16, 2026

A hydraulic grab-also known as a hydraulic grapple-is a specialized attachment that utilizes hydraulic cylinders to actuate jaws for the purpose of gripping and handling materials. Classified by shape, these units fall into two categories: clamshell grabs and orange-peel grabs. In terms of function, they are employed across a range of applications, including scrap steel handling, dredging operations, and waste management. The device's structure comprises key components such as hydraulic cylinders, bucket teeth, and connecting columns. Its operating principle relies on a hydraulic pump to drive fluid flow, thereby controlling the movement of the jaws; furthermore, it is equipped with hydraulic-controlled check valves to ensure hydraulic pressure locking, enabling it to handle a maximum load of up to 8 tons.

This attachment is compatible with various types of heavy machinery, such as hydraulic excavators and tower cranes. It is available in both rotating and non-rotating configurations, making it suitable for applications involving construction foundation excavation, port cargo handling, and material processing within steel mills. Maintenance protocols require the periodic replacement of hydraulic fluid (with the initial change recommended after 500 hours of operation) and the lubrication of pivot pins with lithium-based grease to ensure optimal operational performance.
