Various Classifications Of Grabs

Mar 18, 2026

Classification by Shape
Based on shape, grabs can be classified into clamshell grabs and orange-peel grabs. The former consists of two complete shells, while the latter is composed of three or more jaws.

Classification by Drive Method
Based on the drive method, grabs can be broadly categorized into two main types: hydraulic grabs and mechanical grabs.

Hydraulic grabs are equipped with their own opening and closing mechanisms-typically driven by hydraulic cylinders-and those composed of multiple jaws are also referred to as hydraulic grapples. Hydraulic grabs are widely utilized in specialized hydraulic machinery, such as hydraulic excavators and hydraulic tower cranes.

Mechanical grabs do not feature built-in opening and closing mechanisms; instead, they are typically actuated by external forces via ropes or linkages. Based on their operational characteristics, they can be further classified into double-rope grabs and single-rope grabs, with the double-rope grab being the most commonly used type.
